A new 'SIGAUS Forest' is now growing in the Madrid municipality of Tres Cantos

The planting of the 'Thirteenth SIGAUS Forest’ has been completed, offering a new green space of 3 hectares housing 1,000 trees that will contribute to offsetting CO2 emissions and fight against climate change. To find out more about this new urban forest, representatives of the city council and SIGAUS visited the site located in the Parque Sur de Tres Cantos. Local schoolchildren will also play a leading role in this green initiative, as they will be responsible for naming each of these trees through a drawing contest, strengthening their commitment to caring for our natural surroundings.

The Thirteenth SIGAUS Forest is now a reality in the Parque Sur de Tres Cantos, a 30-hectare forest park where the public can stroll and enjoy nature, as well as having an area for urban vegetable gardens. This green lung features 1,000 trees of different autochthonous species that are in addition to the over 55,000 trees of the Tricantina forest mass. Specifically, the plantation features 500 stone pine trees, 250 cork oaks and 250 holm oaks which will contribute to cleaning our atmosphere and to conserving biodiversity, and provide the inhabitants of Tres Cantos with a new area to enjoy leisure and sport outdoors.

To see this new SIGAUS Forest first-hand, a visit to the plantation was organised, attended by Jesus Moreno Garcia (mayor of Tres Cantos), Pedro Fernandez (Councillor for Public Services of the City Council), and Javier Juarez (Councillor of the Presidency); they were accompanied by Buenaventura Gonzalez del Campo (president of SIGAUS), and Eduardo de Lecea (CEO of SIGAUS).

The mayor of Tres Cantos, Jesús Moreno, thanked SIGAUS for having selected Tres Cantos to participate in this initiative and pointed out, ‘This urban forest adds to the extensive green areas of the city in a municipality with more than 55,000 trees, making Tres Cantos even greener’.

The Councillor for Public Services, Pedro Fernandez assured that ‘the SIGAUS Forest of Tres Cantos will help to offset CO2 emissions and to conserve biodiversity, and give its residents new natural spaces to enjoy leisure and sport outdoors.’

We are very proud to give continuity to our SIGAUS Forests initiative, with which we generate positive value in society beyond our corporate goals.

We are very proud to give continuity to our SIGAUS Forests initiative, with which we generate positive value in society beyond our corporate goals. There are already 13 planted forests, new green areas that continue to grow and even sometimes serve as the driving force behind other municipal environmental projects. Furthermore, this year we are expanding the value provided through an environmental education campaign with the schoolchildren of Tres Cantos, promoting awareness of protecting nature among children, who will be key to building a sustainable future,’ says Buenaventura González del Campo.

The plantation has been marked with panels that, in addition to stating the location, serve to inform residents of the species planted, their characteristics and their CO2 absorption capacity (between 50 to 70 kg of CO2 per foot in their first 20 years, depending on the species), according to data from the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge.

Besides financing the planting, SIGAUS has been responsible for installing a drip irrigation system that contributes to the survival of the trees during their first years of life, and has also undertaken to replace the trees that have not survived after the first summer period following planting.

Raising awareness among schoolchildren in Tres Cantos

‘SIGAUS Forests' is a reforestation and environmental awareness project that already has 13,000 trees planted in various locations around Madrid and in the city of Toledo, aiming to generate a positive impact on society and the environment through the planting of urban forests.

This time, the initiative has also been closely linked to the schoolchildren of Tres Cantos, with the aim of raising awareness for caring for the environment among our youngest residents. 6th-grade primary school students in the town will receive an educational talk at their school on environmental protection and, specifically, the importance of managing waste oil from cars and machinery. In addition, the schoolchildren will participate in the contest 'SIGAUS Forest: Give it life with art’, in which they will draw a picture of a tree and give it a name. This will serve to name each of the 1,000 trees of the Thirteenth SIGAUS Forest. Furthermore, the school of the student who wins the top prize will be able to visit the plantation next spring, where they will participate in a recreational and educational gymkhana.

The trees of the Thirteenth SIGAUS Forest will soon be photographed, geolocated and labelled with the chosen names so that users can consult this information on the SIGAUS Forests website: www.hacesmasdeloquecrees.org.
